Participants are responsible for obtaining their copy of this month's text before the beginning of the book study.

This book is more than a resource--it's a movement to transform reading instruction. With 67% of kids in the U.S. struggling to read, we need change. The Science of Reading in Action tackles the top barriers: lack of research-based training, practical tools, and support.

Join Maddy Johnson as she facilitates June's book study and learn about:

  • What research really says about how kids learn to read (Hint: Social media doesn't always get it right!).
  • Quickly identifying and overcoming the biggest challenges for struggling readers.
  • Ready-to-use activities and strategies that make brain-friendly reading instruction a breeze.
  • Simple techniques that help students memorize words 10x faster than flashcards.

Written by expert educator Malia Hollowell, this book makes teaching reading easier for you--and ensures every student thrives. Bring the science of reading to life in your classroom and see real results.

This book is facilitated by MSTA Member Service Coordinator, Maddy Johnson. Maddy is a lifelong learner with a teaching, coaching, curriculum development, and educational technology background. As a Member Service Coordinator at MSTA, she supports teachers in her area. Her career began teaching 1st grade and 4th grade ELA while coaching high school and middle school sports. She has completed the LETRS training and has studied the science of reading during her time teaching ELA. With a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction and a Bachelor's in Elementary Education, Maddy is now pursuing a Doctorate in Curriculum, Instruction, and Educational Technology. She integrates technology into education to benefit students and educators, offering practical strategies for professional development. Outside of work, Maddy enjoys reading, writing, spending time with family, pets, friends, and watching scary movies.

  • The Learning Management System, Teachable, is used to house discussion board conversations and group materials. Guiding questions and tasks are posted in the Teachable course. These questions allow participants to share and reflect on the topics and ideas presented in the reading. Teachable courses are by design asynchronous.

  • If this is your first online learning activity with MSTA, you will receive an email from Teachable to confirm your email address. (This is the email address you used to register for the event.) After confirming your email address, you must create a password. On the next screen, you will see the course(s) for which you are registered.

  • If you have previously participated in one of MSTA's online activities, you can log into Teachable. Your email is your username, and the password you used when confirming your email address. This will give you access to your account and products.

  • Participants are expected to participate in Zoom meetings to provide an opportunity to network with other participants over the concepts shared.
  • Application is used throughout the course as participants complete a Choice Board task reflective in nature. Assignment details are shared in the Teachable course and intended for participants to apply concepts learned and discussed during the course to their classroom. Once enrolled in the course, participants will continue to have access to the resources shared that support the learning in the book.

PD Certification: At the end of the month, PD certificates will be generated for participants who completed all book study requirements. PD certificates will be emailed to participants.
