Cost:  $250.00 per person or $150.00 for lunch only on Saturday and no lodging included..  The fee includes cost of workshop, lodging on Friday and Saturday night, three meals on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday.

Participants can earn up to two hours of graduate credit at a cost of $145.00 per hour if interested. 

1 in every 4 students have witnessed or experienced a traumatic event.  Oftentimes, these traumatic experiences emerge as challenging behaviors frustrating and detracting teachers from teaching.  Traditionally, we have utilized rewards and consequences.  Sometimes shame and humiliation are invoked and when we are at our wit’s end, we suspend or expel.  With today’s students these antiquated practices no longer work.  So, what should we do when students misbehave, disrupt the learning, and refuse to stop acting out?  Join Dr. Joe Sartorius and Dr. Deana Layton to understand the impact trauma has on  students and learn about restorative practices that help students be accountable for their actions and become more successful inside the classroom and beyond.  
 
Learner outcomes:
  • Gain an understanding of how childhood trauma impacts learning and behavior
  • Establish procedures and expectations for student behavior that encourage the development of positive interpersonal skills
  • Understand the ABC behavior: the antecedents to the behavior, the behavior itself, and the consequences of the behavior
  • Develop a non-confrontational rapport with even the most challenging students
  • Explore changes in teaching behaviors that will improve student classroom management
  • Learn how to use the management of time, space, transitions, and activities to keep students focused, engaged and eliminate behavior distractions

Participants are encouraged to bring the book: Better Than Carrots or Sticks:  Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management by Dominique Smith.

Bunker Hill is scenic and secluded which means it’s also remote but not terribly hard to find. If you’re using GPS, you may lose signal along the way. You’ll want to acquaint yourself with the map before you start driving. My #1 navigation tip is that once you take Hwy 17 to Hwy O, you’re done thinking because when Hwy O ends, you’re there! If you get lost, call Bunker Hill (417-934-2333) and they can give you directions. 
When you pull into Bunker Hill, proceed straight down the hill (don’t turn right) and you’ll see signs for where to check in.
